Gantt Charts are commonly used graphical representations of projects, showing tasks durations as horizontal lines indicating starting and ending times as well as providing details such as assigned resources etc.

dotProject provides a series of Gantt Chart views of projects. Looking at a Gantt Chart via the Gantt Tab on the Project Detail view, for example, will give you the chart for that particular project.

If you were to select the Gantt tab on the main Project Display (Project Module) however, it will list all active projects.

All Gantt chart displays have options that allow you to configure the display / details incorporated in the Gantt chart.

The arrows at the extreme left and right of the display are used to move the dates (from and to) backwards and forwards by one month at a time. This will automatically change the Gantt display to those dates.

You can also use the From / To options - click on the calendar selection option beside either date to display the standard dotProject popup calendar and select the required date from there. When you use the From / To option (unlike the month arrows) you will need to click on the submit button to effect the date / display change.

On the Main Project / All Projects Chart, the dropdown option All Projects, Show Tasks Option will expand the Gantt Charts to a detailed display for all projects, rather than just a specific one.

Turning on captions shows listing of task assignee names against the bar chart element for each task.

Show inactive incorporates all inactive tasks for the project in the Gantt Chart (conversely keeping it ticked off does not include inactive tasks in the listing). (Similarly in the All Projects Gantt this works to show inactive / active projects).

As of version 2.1.1 we have incorporated a warning message for sites that, on testing by the software, find that there are likely to be issues with displaying Gantt charts. This message is in the format:

  • We could not configure your memory or your memory configuration is too low, this may be as a result of Safe Mode being in effect and may result in not enough memory to display this chart.

Also see System Administration for technical details about Gantt Chart production and options for tweaking the layout etc.

You should also refer to Troubleshooting if you are experiencing problems.
